چکیده

Schedule disruptions are commonplace in the airline industry with many flight-delaying events occurring each day. Recently there has been a focus on introducing robustness into airline planning stages to reduce the effect of these disruptions. We propose a recoverable robustness technique as an alternative to robust optimisation to reduce the effect of disruptions and the cost of recovery. We formulate the recoverable robust tail assignment problem (RRTAP) as a stochastic program, solved using column generation in the master and subproblems of the Benders decomposition. We implement a two-phase algorithm for the Benders decomposition incorporating the Magnanti-Wong [21] enhancement techniques. The RRTAP includes costs due to flight delays, cancellation, and passenger rerouting, and the recovery stage includes cancellation, delay, and swapping options. To highlight the benefits of simultaneously solving planning and recovery problems in the RRTAP we compare our tail assignment solution with the tail assignment generated using a connection cost function presented in Grönkvist [15]. Using airline data we demonstrate that by developing a better tail assignment plan via the RRTAP framework, one can reduce recovery costs in the event of a disruption.

Robust Quadratic Assignment Problem with Uncertain Locations

We consider a generalization of the classical quadratic assignment problem, where coordinates of locations are uncertain and only upper and lower bounds are known for each coordinate. We develop a mixed integer linear programming model as a robust counterpart of the proposed uncertain model. A key challenge is that, since the uncertain model involves nonlinear objective function of the ...

Robust optimization of a mathematical model to design a dynamic cell formation problem considering labor utilization

Cell formation (CF) problem is one of the most important decision problems in designing a cellular manufacturing system includes grouping machines into machine cells and parts into part families. Several factors should be considered in a cell formation problem. In this work, robust optimization of a mathematical model of a dynamic cell formation problem integrating CF, production planning and w...

Recoverable Robust Knapsacks: Γ-Scenarios

In this paper, we investigate the recoverable robust knapsack problem, where the uncertainty of the item weights follows the approach of Bertsimas and Sim [3, 4]. In contrast to the robust approach, a limited recovery action is allowed, i.e., upto k items may be removed when the actual weights are known. This problem is motivated by the assignment of traffic nodes to antennas in wireless networ...

Recoverable robust knapsacks: the discrete scenario case

Admission control problems have been studied extensively in the past. In a typical setting, resources like bandwidth have to be distributed to the different customers according to their demands maximizing the profit of the company. Yet, in real-world applications those demands are deviating and in order to satisfy their service requirements often a robust approach is chosen wasting benefits for...

The robust recoverable spanning tree problem with interval costs is polynomially solvable

In this paper the robust recoverable spanning tree problem with interval edge costs is considered. The complexity of this problem has remained open to date. It is shown that the problem is polynomially solvable, by using an iterative relaxation method. A generalization of this idea to the robust recoverable matroid basis problem is also presented. Polynomial algorithms for both robust recoverab...
